Sustainability, Energy, Climate Change & Water Quality

Many participants in the workshops shared their concerns about sustainability. Specifically, the region's residents were concerned with reducing our energy use, addressing climate change and preserving our clean water.

Many sustainability issues, either directly or indirectly, link to energy: the exhaust from our cars, power station emissions, greenhouse gases, and the cost to heat and cool that could be spent otherwise. There are two fundamental approaches to reducing energy impacts on the environment. The first is reducing energy consumption; the second is producing cleaner energy. The scenarios specifically focus on identifying strategies for reducing the region's need for energy into the future.

Our region is blessed with an abundance of clean water. However, our continued success depends on preserving the quality of this water. Economically, from the residents who move their businesses here for our region's quality of life to the tourists who come every season, water is a hallmark of our region. Future growth strategies that preserve water quality will best position the Grand Traverse region for a sound economic future.
