Scenario DHOUSING & INFRASTRUCTURE - The majority of future residents of the region will live and work in Traverse City, Cadillac or smaller established cities and towns. Many new renter and owner-occupied multi-unit buildings and townhomes will be built in these cities for working families, seniors, and those who prefer compact low-maintenance residences that are walkable to jobs and commercial areas. Sewer and water infrastructure and road improvements will be focused in Cadillac and Traverse City, while other cities and villages will receive relatively less infrastructure funding.OPEN SPACE and RURAL AREAS - Agricultural land and scenic views will be protected because most of the growth is in cities. With the cities seeing more compact development, urban open space will be enhanced with new trails, active parks and green spaces. TRANSPORTATION - While the primary transportation mode will continue to be the automobile, most people will also use an expanded transit system within and between cities. There will be investment in new walking and biking options that will be designed to be used year-round. There will be limited investment in new and widened roadways. JOBS - The region's economic growth will be based on an expansion of service-based firms primarily in Traverse City and Cadillac, attracted by the area's walkability and vibrant downtowns. Most of the industrial land in the region will remain available for industrial jobs. At the same time the region will market and encourage tourism and agricultural expansion. |
