Grand Vision Champions

The purpose of the Grand Vision Project Champions process is to expand public support for a 50-year vision for land use and transportation in our region and ensure the outcomes are implemented. Project Champions are respected community leaders who have the power to convene key local constituencies. They are committed to an open, citizen-led planning process, willing to speak out in support of the project, and dedicated to ensuring measurable outcomes that benefit future generations.

Specifically, the Grand Vision Champions will:

Build public support for the process and expand citizen participation.

  • Give the process a higher profile and clearer identity by gaining support of business, government, and non-profit sectors

  • Serve as spokespeople for the process at public meetings and through written statements.

  • Assist in raising funds and in-kind resources to support the process.

Ensure the results of the visioning process are held accountable to measurable objectives and community values.

  • Advocate for setting and monitoring indices that measure and demonstrate progress.

  • Support implementation of the study's findings.

Develop broad regional involvement and participation.

  • Emphasize the six county geographic scope of the study and help to facilitate the input of communities in outlying counties.

  • Strengthen the involvement of regional leaders and citizens.

Time Commitment: Every effort will be made to respect the time of the Grand Vision Champions. Meetings will be held periodically as needed, but the group will not be required to meet more than a handful of times throughout the two year process. Individual champions will be invited to appear at public events, distribute support letters, and write op-eds as they are willing and able. Chairs of the Champions group will be established to ensure efficiency and focus. The Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce, the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments, the Michigan Land Use Institute, and the Mead and Hunt consulting team is offering to support the Champions group and work to ensure strong coordination with planning process.
